Manali It is a popular tourist destination and serves as the gateway to Lahaul & Spiti district as well as Leh. It has a reputation as a backpacking center and honeymoon destination. Manali is high altitude Himalayan resort town in the northern part of India’s in the Himachal Pradesh, near Kullu.

It is situated at a shore of River Beas and at high altitude of 2,050 meters above from the sea level. It is also a gateway for skiing in the Solang Valley and trekking in Parvati valley and home to 3,900 meters high Rohtang Pass, which is a popular jumping off point for paragliding. Rafting and mountaineering are also great activities in the Pir Panjal Mountains.

Manali is located in the Kullu district, about 265 km north of the state capital, Shimla, 320 km north east of Chandigarh and 573 km northeast of Delhi.

Manali is named after the Sanatan Hindu lawgiver Manu. The name Manali is regarded as the derivative of ‘Manu-Alaya’ which literally means ‘the abode of Manu’. Legend has it that sage Manu stepped off his ark in Manali to recreate human life after a great flood had deluged the world. Manali lies in the North of Kullu Valley. The valley is often referred to as the ‘Valley of the Gods’. Old Manali village has an ancient temple dedicated to sage Manu.

The climate in Manali is predominantly cold during winter and moderately cool during summer. The temperatures ranges from −7 °C  to 30 °C over the year with the hottest day crossing 30 °C and the coldest day going below −7 °C. The average temperature during summer is between 10 °C to 30 °C and between −7 °C to 15 °C in the winter.
